Step-By-Step Instructions
Step 1: Cut the camembert. We recommend freezing it for 30 minutes to make cutting it easier. Cut it into 1-inch pieces and place on a parchment paper to avoid them from sticking.
Step 2: Cut the puff pastry squares. Cut the puff pastry into 3-inch squares and line them on a tray lined with parchment paper. Make slits around the edges and prick the center with a fork.
Step 3: Assemble. Brush the edges with egg wash. Place around 1-2 tablespoon of caramelized onion in the center, followed by 1-2 pieces of camembert cheese.
Step 4: Bake. Bake them in a preheated oven at 375ºF (190ºC) on the middle rack for 13 minutes or until golden brown. Place some rosemary on top. Enjoy!
Recipe Expert Tips
If you're going to make these caramelized onion tartlets with camembert recipe, make sure to follow these top tips!
- Semi-defrost the puff pastry if using a frozen one. This will give you time and make it easier to handle as it tends to get soft quickly.
- Freeze the fresh puff pastry for 30 minutes before using. Same reasoning as above; semi-frozen puff pastry is easier to work with.
- Make the slits on the squares. This will make the edges rise beautifully!
- Freeze the camembert before slicing. Trust us; this will make it way easier to cut without your knife and fingers getting sticky.
- Chill the assembled squares. If the puff pastry squares feel soft after assembling, place the tray in the fridge for 15-30 minutes to firm them up. This will ensure they bake beautifully later!
How To Serve, Store, And Freeze
Serve—These caramelized onion tartlets with camembert can be served hot or slightly warm, which is our preference, or at room temperature.
Store—Store them in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Freeze—We do not recommend freezing baked tartlets with puff pastry, as they can easily break. However, you can freeze assembled, unbaked squares. Place them on a parchment-lined tray and freeze for 1 hour. Once frozen, transfer to an airtight container and store in the freezer for up to 6 months. Bake directly from the freezer, adding a few extra minutes until golden brown.
Reheat—Preheat the oven to 375ºF (190ºC) and reheat the puff pastry squares for about 5 minutes, or until they are warmed through. Our preferred method is to use an air fryer without preheating it; put them in the air fryer, set the temperature to 300ºF (150ºC), and reheat them for 5 to 10 minutes.
