What Is Tahini?
Tahini is basically ground toasted sesame seeds. It has a loose, creamy consistency, almost similar to pancake batter. We love that, don't we?
As for its taste, it with nutty, earthy and toasty flavours. Some even might say it has a touch of bitterness to it (which I don't!). Tahini is an important ingredient in any hummus and baba ganoush. You can't make them without tahini, I'm telling ya!
Although it's naturally not sweet, it can be used in the sweet recipe with no problems at all. Make my 3-ingredient healthy tahini cookies, you'll love them! And oh, I bet you haven't tried this amazing tahini banana toast!
Ingredients & Substitutions
Tahini - Use natural toasted tahini paste. If you can choose one of a darker colour, the better (meaning its more toasted, yum!).
SUBSTITUTIONS: This is a tahini sauce recipe, to begin with, but if for some reason you don't have it on hands then use any other natural nut/seed butter.
Lemon - Balances the buttery nutty flavours from tahini.
SUBSTITUTIONS: Any tangy citruses would work. Lime is the best. Just know that whatever you use will affect the overall taste of the sauce, obviously.
How To Make Tahini Sauce
- Ingredients - Add tahini, lemon juice, salt and garlic into a bowl.
- Whisk - Whisk until you get a thick paste.
- Loosen up - Add in water bit by bit and continue whisking to loosen it up to your desired consistency.
- Parsley - Add in chopped parsley and mix well.
Tips To Make This Recipe
- Use natural roasted tahini paste. Meaning the only ingredient is sesame seeds, nothing else.
- Don't be alarmed when you get a thick paste at first when you whisk. Just loosen it up later with some water.
- Adjust the salt at the end, if needed. This depends on how much water you use to loosen up the sauce.
How To Serve & Store
Serve - Think of it as a dipping sauce or a condiment sauce. It goes great with falafel (of course!), roasted veggies, any wraps, dressing for salads or buddha bowls, or even sauce for your burgers.
Store - Keep in an air-tight container. It lasts a minimum of 1 week in the fridge. Although I don't think you need to (since it's going to be long gone before!) you can also freeze it for up to 6 months.
